Gianna is a breath of fresh air at the iconic Istrian winery Kozlovic. The trained oenologist is the fifth generation to run the top-class winery in Momjan. She shares her personal favorite places, culinary hotspots, and insider tips for unforgettable experiences on the peninsula.
Gianna Kozlovic is part of one of Croatia’s oldest winemaking families. The wines from the traditional Kozlovic winery are so popular that they’re shipped as far away as New York. If you’re there, you can sample the terroir-focused wines on a suspended terrace. In this interview, Gianna talks about other bars she enjoys drinking wine at, which restaurants she finds great, and what’s new and exciting in Istria.
Istria insider tips from the young winemaker
What’s new and what’s doing Istria really well right now?
I’m really looking forward to the new culinary highlights opening in Poreč this year—especially Ana Roš’s new bistro and a Michelin-starred restaurant at Hotel Pical. It’s going to be exciting!
If not at home: On which terrace do you like to enjoy a good glass of wine with friends in the evening?
The Amore Bar in Novigrad is a beautiful place to watch the sunset. The atmosphere is unique—the wine list could use some fine-tuning, though.

Playing tennis or simply hiking with an ice cream in hand – that’s my perfect day outside. Activity meets enjoyment!
Your insider tip for a relaxing day at the beach?
Be sure to go in May, when the beaches are still deserted. Pack everything for a picnic—and, of course, some good friends. If it’s warm enough, a dip in the water is also worth it!
Party time! Which bar will you party the night away at with friends?
I’ve always loved the Alaya in Portorož. Dancing outside under palm trees, DJ music, and a huge dance floor—it’s pure vacation feeling.

The Rivalmare in Novigrad – modern, charming, and perfectly located. I think Novigrad is one of the most beautiful towns in Istria.
